Motor Recovery After Nerve Reconstruction

Orthocell Ltd
has published prospective clinical data on Remplir, its collagen nerve wrap designed to support the repair of damaged peripheral nerves. Remplir is placed around the site where two nerve ends are surgically joined (the coaptation site) and is intended to create a protective, compression-free environment that supports healing and reduces scar-related complications. The company’s foundational study followed patients for two years after upper-extremity nerve reconstruction.

In the study, 19 patients underwent a total of 36 nerve repair procedures, including nerve transfers and graft repairs. The group included individuals with traumatic nerve injuries as well as patients with cervical spinal cord injury–related paralysis affecting upper limb function. Meaningful motor recovery — defined as Medical Research Council grade ≥3, indicating the return of active movement against gravity — was achieved in 61% of target muscles at 12 months, improving to 75% at 24 months. Recovery was strongest in muscles closest to the repair site, reaching 76% at one year and 85% at two years, demonstrating continued functional improvement over time.

The procedures were performed at specialist centres in Western Australia, including Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, with involvement from affiliated surgical and research institutions. Patients were followed prospectively, allowing structured assessment of motor recovery throughout the healing process.

In addition to tracking clinical outcomes, Orthocell also reported detailed material analysis of Remplir using advanced imaging techniques to characterise its structure. Taken together, the published results position Remplir as a purpose-designed collagen nerve wrap supported by two-year clinical data demonstrating progressive motor recovery following peripheral nerve reconstruction.
